South-African Airways

FlySAA Background

In 1934, the very first South African Airline, the SAA, was founded and became the national carrier of South Africa. This airline flies to 35 destinations worldwide. With 100 fleets, they quickly became South Africa’s number 1 trusted flight coordinator.

Surviving the 2nd World War and apartheid, the old national colours of orange, white and blue needed to be replaced. The new livery was based upon the new national flag, with a sun motif. The Afrikaans name was replaced with and English one and, as a symbol of the new rainbow nation, one of SAA’s 747-300s was painted in bright colours.

On 24 June 1995, a SAA Boeing 747 captained by Laurie Kay produced one of sport’s most memorable moments when he piloted his plane over Ellis Park ahead of the Rugby World Cup final. It was described by a rugby writer as, "Completely unexpected, brilliantly executed, totally thrilling," and a pass that will live forever.

South African Airways is a member of Star Alliance. To become a member, an airline must offer and comply with the highest industry standards of customer service, security and technical infrastructure. They have achieved their vision to be Africa’s leading wold-class airline.
